BioByte Initiative is a free student-led program based in Orange County, CA educating the youth about ethical AI literacy while incorporating it into interactive biology projects. It operates as a 501(c)(3) under Hack Club Bank's status and directly addresses the relevant issue of overdependency on artificial intelligence displayed by much of young scholars today caused by a 39% in AI dependency by the general American public in 2026 alone.
BioByte aims to decrease overdependency on AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, etc., which diminishes the development of children's creativity over time and causes them to partake in plagiarism and unoriginality.
Our goal is to increase the critical-thinking skills of children along with AI literacy skills that could be applied to relevant core subjects, such as biology, for if they do decide to incorporate AI into their work someday, as preventing an individual's use of AI in their free time is out of our control and the chances of them using AI have likely tripled due to the vast majority of companies, individuals, and education systems implementing more AI into their work as of 2026, they will be able to be literate in using AI as a tool to reaffirm their original work instead of to generate work for them. The importance of this is that AI literacy is an important skill that many jobs prefer their employees to have.
Disclaimer: Our curriculum does not promote activities such as plugging prompts into AI and expecting it to generate work for the student as that completely goes against what our mission states. We specifically designed our curriculum to only use AI to reaffirm work that has already been done by the students. All of the work will already be completed by the students without the help of AI generation, as it will only be used to double check the accuracy of their work at the very end of each project. The AI literacy part of our curriculum addresses how students are going to ethically utilize AI as a tool instead of as a method to plagiarize.
